Fallout from sub-prime loans, writers strike, sinking real estate values, rising gasoline prices… the list goes on. Happy New Year?!?! Businesses nationwide are complaining of decreased consumer spending and increasing operating costs. The dental healthcare field is not immune to these woes, directly affecting dental imaging. As consumers and business people, it’s beginning to feel like the candle is burning at both ends. Nobody wants to get burned, so what can you do????
Attend the AADMRT Spring Seminar on March 15, 2008, at the Universal Hilton in Universal Studios, California! Dr. Baldwin Marchack (restorative and implant dentist in Pasadena, California), will be on hand to explain how large corporations use “branding” to their advantage. He’ll share valuable insights that can be applied to your own business to boost your bottom line. If you’re not a business owner, you may be asking why you should care; it’s not your problem—or is it? If the business continues to slow down, where do you think cuts will be made? When the turnaround happens and you were part of the solution, who do you think will get that well-deserved raise or bonus?
There are plenty of reasons to attend this specially designed dental professional program sponsored by the AADMRT. “Cone beam,” “volumetric” or “dental” CT, it really doesn’t matter what you call it—just know that it has revolutionized dental imaging! If you feel this particular type of imaging is only good for dental implants, think again: Orthodontic programs at major dental schools are incorporating cone beam CT technology into their curriculum for 3D cephalometrics, and major third-party software companies such as Dolphin are investing heavily to meet these demands. Why? It is reasonable to predict that orthodontics will eventually embrace the significant value that cone beam technology provides. Considered the “standard of excellence,” will cone beam imaging soon become the “standard of care” across the dental field?
Find out the answer from our second speaker, Mr. George Peterson, attorney-at-law (Los Angeles). He will discuss the theory and reality of “standard of care” with particular emphasis on cone beam imaging, and review the legal aspects as they pertain to dental professionals. If pathology exists in areas not located in the dental area, is the dentist responsible to evaluate these gray areas? Would that be considered practicing medicine without a license? Mr. Peterson’s significant experience in the dental litigation arena will enlighten you and answer these questions, and many more!
We have all seen images from dental cone beam units. Tell the truth—do you really know what you are viewing??? Dr. Dania Tamimi of 3D Diagnostics (Boston, Massachusetts), will give us an oral radiologist’s perspective on CBCT images. As imaging technicians, are we providing the necessary components, such as radiographic markers, for the oral radiologist to deliver the most accurate reports for implant placement? If not, this is your golden opportunity to explain to the referring dentists the huge benefits of providing the markers before you take the scan. Show them an example to clearly demonstrate the value. When you build this type of rapport with the referral, who will they think of the next time they need dental imaging?
Should the radiologist report be done on every cone beam scan? Is it necessary to have CBCT for all dental implant cases? What scanning protocols should be used? Dr. Tamimi will answer those questions while guiding you through the complexity of sorting through the vast amounts of data that occurs for every scan she reads. You will truly gain a deeper appreciation for the valuable service provided by oral radiologists!

Take a look around you. Nike, Coke, Pepsi, Starbucks; brands are everywhere. Its time for you and me to learn a lesson from the world of big brands and find out what it takes to stand out and prosper.
This presentation will investigate companies not necessarily in dental-related industries, but which have nonetheless successfully branded themselves as great companies. What we discover, the secrets of branding, will help us transition ourselves and our businesses from good to great. We will not only focus on what to do, but will also focus on what not to do and what to stop doing.
Upon completion of this presentation, participants should be able to:

Baldwin W. Marchack, D.D.S., M.B.A.
Baldwin Marchack is a 1971 graduate of the University of Southern California, School of Dentistry. In 1989 he received his MBA from the Anderson Graduate School of Management at UCLA.
Dr Marchack belongs to numerous professional organizations including the American Prosthodontic Society, the Academy of Prosthodontics, the Pacific Coast Society for Prosthodontics, the International College of Prosthodontists, the Academy of Osseointegration and the American Academy of Esthetic Dentistry.
He is a Fellow of the American College of Dentists, a Fellow of the International College of Dentists, a Fellow of the Pierre Fauchard Academy, and a Fellow of the Academy of General Dentistry.
Dr Marchack is the author of numerous articles and has presented over 300 lectures on practice management and on esthetic and restorative implant dentistry nationally and internationally. He is the current president of the Pacific Coast Society for Prosthodontics, president-elect of the American Prosthodontic Society, and the past president of the American Academy of Esthetic Dentistry. He serves on the Board of Councilors for the University of Southern California School of Dentistry and is Adjunct Professor of Clinical Dentistry at the University of Southern California School of Dentistry. Dr Marchack is the Vice-Chair of the Editorial Council for the Journal of Prosthetic Dentistry, and maintains a private practice with a focus on esthetic, restorative and implant dentistry in Pasadena, California.

Mr. Peterson is one of Los Angeles’ best known trial lawyers, acknowledged both by judges and by his peers for his abilities in the courtroom in defending complex, high damage jury trials. Mr. Peterson’s impressive trial experience over the last thirty years has ranged from defending the individual clinician in medical or dental malpractice involving catastrophic injury or wrongful death, to representing major medical centers and public entities in multi-party trials lasting weeks to months. His track record for success is one of the best in the state, both for bringing in the verdict in favor of his client or in “containing the damage” in cases that are high risk but simply cannot be settled prior to trial. He is a Fellow of the American College of Trial Lawyers, a Diplomate of the American Board of Trial Advocates, and a member of the California Medico-Legal Committee, all organizations limited to attorneys with established credentials for integrity, knowledge, and skilled advocacy.
Mr. Peterson also represents both individuals and employers in jury trials involving emotionally charged employment issues, including sexual harassment, hostile work environment, failure to accommodate for employee disability and wrongful termination or discrimination. His abilities and reputation enable him to intercept cases before trial, if that is desired, or to take even the most difficult cases to trial rather than submit to excessive settlement demands.
Mr. Peterson is equally well-known for his meticulous preparation as well as for his ability to coax the best courtroom performance out of the most inexperienced and anxious witness. Clients who have been unable to work effectively with other counsel or who simply are unfamiliar with the judicial process work with Mr. Peterson to overcome the barriers that otherwise would prevent them from effectively communicating their position to the jury. Mr. Peterson frequently lectures at medical schools and physician conventions on how to overcome the fear of the courtroom, how to communicate effectively with jurors, and how to frame the issues in terms that will be most persuasive. He has often lectured to lawyer audiences on techniques for jury selection.
Mr. Peterson also represents health care professionals in disciplinary proceedings before licensing boards. His professional experience includes as well the extensive representation of other attorneys in legal malpractice litigation. He is a graduate of Loyola University of Los Angeles (B.A.) and of Loyola University of Los Angeles School of Law (J.D.). Mr. Peterson served as a Marine Corps officer before commencing his private practice of law.
TOPIC: Through My Eyes: How a Radiologist Reads Images.
Presentor: Dr. Dania Tamimi
The purpose of this talk is to familiarize the radiation technician with the systematic approach that the radiologist takes to view and interpret CBCT images. As we go through the images, the technician will get a sense for what the radiologist needs to see in order to make an accurate interpretation. FOV limitation and slice thickness will be covered as well as inappropriate prescription of radiographic studies, especially CBCT.
